Digestive products are among the most popular in Ayurveda, and they come in many forms. Here is how to choose.

Common forms

  • Tablets and vatis such as triphala tablets are the easiest to take and to travel with.
  • Churnas (powders) are traditionally mixed with warm water. They are good value but have a strong taste.
  • Arishtas and asavas are fermented liquid tonics usually taken after meals. They contain a little natural alcohol and come in heavier glass bottles.
  • Kashayam tablets are classical Kerala-style decoctions in convenient tablet form.

What to look for

  • Whether it is a classical formula (made by many brands) or a brand’s own proprietary blend.
  • The full ingredient list, especially if you avoid certain herbs or alcohol.
  • Pack size: larger packs are better value for products you take daily.
