A kashayam is a classical herbal decoction: herbs simmered in water and reduced. It is especially associated with the Kerala tradition of Ayurveda.
Traditional vs modern
Traditionally, kashayams were made fresh or sold as concentrated liquids, then diluted before use. Several Kerala makers now also sell them as kashayam tablets, which are easier to store, carry and ship.
How to read the name
Most kashayams are named after their main herb or the number of ingredients. For example, “Rasnasaptakam” refers to rasna and a group of seven herbs.
Choosing
- Tablets are best for overseas customers: light, stable and leak-free.
- Liquids are traditional but heavier and come in glass bottles.
- Kashayams are usually taken over a period of time; follow the label or your practitioner.
