Kumkumadi tailam is a classical Ayurvedic facial oil. “Kumkuma” means saffron, its signature ingredient.
What is in it
Alongside saffron, classical recipes include around 20 or more herbs such as sandalwood, manjistha, licorice and vetiver, cooked into a base oil (often sesame).
How it is traditionally used
- A few drops are warmed between the fingertips and gently massaged into clean skin, usually at night.
- It is traditionally used for a bright, even-looking complexion.
How to choose
- Classical vs cosmetic: some products are classical Ayurvedic tailams; others are cosmetic oils “inspired by” kumkumadi. Check the label.
- Real saffron is expensive. A very cheap kumkumadi oil may contain little.
- Bottle type: dark glass protects the oil from light.
Tips
- Patch-test on a small area first.
- For external use only; keep away from eyes.
